What is Teeth Whitening?

Just as it sounds, teeth whitening treatments break down stains and discolouration to lighten the colour of your teeth. Because whitening can only lighten your natural teeth, existing restorations may need to be replaced to match your new smile.

Every patient is different; teeth whitening may not be suitable for every candidate, or you may need to address existing dental concerns first in order to safely undergo whitening procedures. We can help you understand your options and exactly what to expect from your whitening treatments.

Teeth whitening FAQ

According to the ADA, the risk of experiencing negative side effects from whitening treatments increases when it doesn’t come from a registered dental professional1. Additionally, you may have pre-existing conditions or dental issues that make whitening treatments ineffective or problematic; you should seek a professional opinion before undergoing any whitening procedure.

The ADA has described possible side effects of whitening:

  • Heightened tooth sensitivity
  • Chemical blisters or burns on the gums or mouth
  • Uneven or splotchy colouring
  • Diminished strength or hardness of the enamel surface (sometimes this can be irreversible)
  • Lack of results2

Whitening your teeth under the supervision of a cosmetic dentist has many safety benefits. The dentist will make you use of protective goggles, gels and gum separators to ensure that your gums and other soft tissues in your mouth are not exposed to the active bleaching ingredient. The dentist is also a trained clinician who is able to react in a calm and professional manner in the unlikely event of an allergic reaction or emergency situation. The dentist’s office is also a properly sanitised environment that minimises cross-infection, which makes it ideal for the teeth whitening procedure.

We recommend a consultation with your Gold Coast dentist, or even a professional cleaning, before undergoing whitening treatment. This can ensure that your procedure is as effective as possible. Speaking with your dentist first can decrease your risk of spending money on treatments that are less effective for you.

Your own individual treatment can depend on the type and extent of the whitening treatment you choose. We’ll be happy to outline your treatment plan with you during your consultation.

Teeth can turn yellow for many reasons, including when the enamel wears down, when plaque builds up on the surface or when they're stained by food, drink, nicotine or other sources. Teeth stains and discolouration that can't be removed by brushing may benefit from treatments such as tooth whitening.

Teeth don't whiten by themselves. Improving your diet and oral hygiene could remove some surface stains, but the only way to noticeably brighten teeth is through cosmetic dental treatments. Teeth bleaching at the dental clinic and teeth whitening home kits supplied by a dentist are more reliable than over-the-counter whitening products.

Tooth whitening is a personal choice. If you book a consultation for our Gold Coast tooth whitening service at Robina Town Dental, we'll explain what the treatment involves, what it costs, and help you to set realistic expectations so you can decide if it's right for you.

Teeth whitening cost can vary according to the type of treatment you choose. Teeth whitening on the Gold Coast with Robina Town Dental starts from:

  • $850 for in-surgery POLAOFFICE+ whitening
  • $450 for home teeth whitening kits

We offer a choice of payment plans to help make your Gold Coast teeth whitening more affordable.

The most effective teeth whitening home kits are those provided by your dentist. They will provide the correct amount of whitening gel you need and measure your mouth to create custom trays that fit perfectly over your teeth for more even results than can be achieved using a generic kit.

Teeth bleaching isn't permanent. Depending on how well you look after your teeth and avoid stains, your white smile may last for a few months or much longer. If you choose Gold Coast teeth whitening with Robina Town Dental, we can arrange top-up appointments at our clinic or provide home kits to help you maintain your smile.

Repeated use of teeth bleaching treatments may sometimes weaken the enamel surface of teeth, which can make teeth more prone to damage and wear. The safest teeth whitening is in-chair treatments with a dental professional, as they can control the exposure of your teeth to the whitening agent to minimise damage.

As a cosmetic treatment, teeth whitening cost is not usually covered by insurance in Australia, but we urge patients to check with their health fund to find out what they can claim.
