ALL YOU NEED TO KNOW ABOUT INVISALIGN®

What is Invisalign®?

What is Invisalign

Invisalign® is an almost invisible way of straightening your teeth with clear aligners. These clear aligners are fairly unnoticeable, meaning that others around you will barely notice that you are undergoing orthodontic treatment.

Invisalign® has many advantages for people who wish to straighten their smile in a discreet manner. This dental appliance allows you to continue with your oral hygiene routine as normal since the aligners are easily removable and you can brush your teeth like you normally would.

Invisalign® can correct mild to moderate bite alignment issues and does not use any bulky wires or metal to straighten your teeth. In most simple orthodontic cases, this treatment closes small gaps between teeth with ease.

However, in case your teeth have very large gaps or are unusually tipped, or for children whose permanent teeth have not yet fully erupted, the use of Invisalign® aligners may be difficult or deemed unsuitable altogether. In this case, your dentist may identify a more suitable solution to straighten your teeth or may refer you to an orthodontist.

It is also important to keep in mind that you must wear your Invisalign® aligners for a minimum of 22 hours per day. If you can foresee any obstacles that will stop you from adhering to these hours, your dentist may not deem you suitable for the treatment, as the procedure would unlikely achieve desired results. The average treatment time with Invisalign® clear aligners is 12 months.

Invisalign® treatment has criteria to be met by the patient before the treatment process can begin. Not every patient is suitable to treat their orthodontic issues with clear aligners.

When is Invisalign® not suitable?

Whilst Invisalign® can typically correct less severe forms of overbites as well as close smaller spaces between teeth, there are specific cases where Invisalign® clear aligners are not suitable for patients. These cases include:

· Complex extrusions (where the teeth are pushed too far forward)

· Very large gaps between teeth

· Severely rotated teeth

· Patients diagnosed with TMJ Disorder (temporomandibular joint disorder). TMJD can be further exacerbated by dental appliances

· Crowns and bridges can pose a significant resistance to an appliance which intends to move your teeth.

Invisalign® for Adolescents

The dentist will also be able to advise if your child/teen is a suitable candidate for Invisalign®. Invisalign® is a great option for teenagers as compared to traditional braces these aligners are barely noticeable. The suitability of your teen to undergo Invisalign® treatment can only be determined by a dental professional.
